Bahia de Tortugas
is a small bay in Baja California, Mexico where there is a fishing cooperative. The Coop promotes sustainable harvests, increase market access and provides stability to fisherman and fishing communities. Shell fish were heavily targeted by foreign enterprises in the early 20th century and in 1930's Mexico began to form the cooperatives in fishing. The people of Tortugas farm abalone on the cliffs of the bay. All abalone are grown from the farm and are never taken from the ocean. The people of Tortugas rely on the fishing cooperative to grow and sustain their economy.
